Gut Check's Guide to Cinco de Mayo

Tomorrow, Saturday, May 5, is Cinco de Drinko Mayo. Though at best a regional holiday in Mexico, we here in the U.S. of A. can't get enough reveling on Sabado 5 de Mayo. Don't get us wrong, we at Gut Check also enjoy indulging in margaritas on the rocks and Mexican food, and thus have compiled a list of the best places in St. Louis to get soused in cerveza at on Cinco de Mayo.

Alton's Cinco de Mayo (Third and Piasa streets, Alton, Illinois; 1-800-258-6645): Downtown block party with kids' activities, food and drink, authentic Mexican music by band Whiskey Dixon and dancers. Sat., May 5. Admission is free.

Amigo Joe's (5901 Southwest Avenue; 314-645-1995): Amigo Joe's is hosting a street party from 59th Street to Hampton Avenue complete with giveaways and drink specials. Sat., May 5, 3-10 p.m., Free.

Amigos Cantina (120 West Jefferson Street, Kirkwood; 314-821-0877): Enjoy live music, food and drink specials and giveaways under the party tent at Amigos Cantina from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sat., May 5. Free.

Atomic Cowboy (4140 Manchester Avenue; 314-775-0775) Spend the afternoon relaxing on Atomic Cowboy's big back patio munching on its lunch and dinner "Baja Fresh"-style menu and sip on its margarita and beer specials. The bar will have live music from 5 p.m. to close at 3 a.m. There is no cover or admission fee for the event, just for food and booze.

Carniceria Latino Americana (2800 Cherokee Street; 314-773-1707): Carniceria Latino Americana will be partipating in Cherokee Street's Cinco de Mayo festivities with food and drink specials on Sat., May 5 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Free.

Chevy's: Chevy's is celebrating with its Party Like It's 1862 event offering seven days of specials from Mon., April 20 to Sun., May 6. The big celebration happens on Sat., May 5, with "The Mother of All Cinco Parties," featuring $5 drafts, games, giveaways, dancing and music, as well as food and drink specials. Free.

Chimichanga's (5425 South Grand Boulevard; 314-352-0202): The street will be closed off for a Cinco de Mayo block party. Rocket 88 will play for the crowd from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sat., May 5, 11 am. to 11 p.m., Free.

Cherokee Street Cinco de Mayo: A festival featuring live music on two stages with more than fifteen bands performing throughout the course of the day. The main stage at California and Cherokee Streets with showcase traditional Latino music and the gringo stage at Nebraska and Cherokee Streets will feature a diverse local line-up. There will also be authentic food and drink, arts and crafts, street entertainment and a People's Joy Parade at 1:11 p.m. starting at Minnesota and Cherokee.

Cinco de Mayo Parade: A celebration to honor the spirit of community on Cherokee St. and the creations of local artists. The People's Joy Parade features crepe paper floats, minstrels, puppeteers, art cars, bike brigades, moving art installations, Elvis impersonators, Mexican wrestlers and more. Parade Route: Starting at Minnesota and Cherokee Streets at 1:11 p.m.; east on Cherokee to Nebraska; north on Nebraska to Utah; east on Utah to Iowa; south on Iowa to Cherokee; east on Cherokee to Texas. Sat., May 5, 1:11 p.m., Free. Cherokee Street, Lemp Ave. and Cherokee St., St. Louis.

Diablito's Cantina (3761 Laclede Avenue; 314-644-4430) : Diablito's will be hosting a two-day party on Fri., May 4, and Sat., May 5 to celebrate Cinco de Mayo from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m., with $4 margaritas available all weekend. Food and drink specials and live music will be featured both days, but the real fun comes on Saturday with games, prizes and giveaways. Both patios will be open at Diablitos with a taco stand, live music provided by DJs, bands, a taco eating contest and other free giveaways. Fri., May 4. from 11 a.m. to 1:30 a.m., Sat., May 5, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 a.m.

Don Carlos Restaurant (2800 Cherokee Street; 314-773-1707): Don Carlos Restaurant will be participating in Cherokee Street's Cinco de Mayo party and will be offering taco, margarita and pina colada specials. Sat., May 5, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Free.

El Paisano (3315 Watson Road; 314-645-7455): A mariachi band will perform through happy hour till 6 p.m., though there are food and drink specials all day. Sat., May 5, Free.

El Porton Mexican Restaurant (4444 Woodson Road, Woodson Terrace; 314-890-8668): Outdoor tent with bar, tacos, quesadillas and nachos. DJ from 4-1:30 p.m. Food and drink specials and giveaways. Sat., May 5, Free. El Torito (2753 Cherokee Street; 314-771-8648): El Torito will be participating in Cherokee Street's Cinco de Mayo party, complete with parade, art, vendors and food and drink specials, as well as the week leading up to Cinco de Mayo with specials each day from Mon., Apr. 30 to Sat., May 5. The festivities on Saturday last from 11 a.m.- 9 p.m., Free.

Flaco's Cocina (8400 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-395-4343): For Flaco's Cocina de Mayo party, there will be a large tent outside housing a satelitte bar and cooking demonstrations. Live music all day along with food and drink specials. Sat., May 5, 11 a.m.- 11 p.m., Free.

Garduno's Mexican Food (2737 Cherokee Street; 314-776-2315) : Garduno's will be participating in Cherokee Street's Cinco de Mayo party, complete with parade, art vendors, and food and drink specials. Sat., May 5, 11 a.m.- 9 p.m., Free.

Hacienda (9748 Manchester Road; 314-962-7100): Cinco de Mayo is an all-day affair at Hacienda, with live music all day and night, food and drink tents outside, a photo booth, free shuttle parking, giveaways, food and drink specials and more. Live music line-up: Uniamous at 1 p.m., Fresh Heir at 4:30 p.m., Adam's Apple at 8 p.m. Festivities begin at 10 a.m. Sat., May 5, Free.

Hispanic Festivals' Cinco de Mayo Village: The Florissant Civic Center will host this Cinco de Mayo Festival featuring dancing, children's activities, puppets, live music, food vendors and much more on Fri., May 4, and Sat., May 5. Admission is free.

La Tejana Taqueria (3149 North Lindbergh Boulevard; 314-291-8500): La Tejana will have food and drinks specials all day as well as live music. Sat., May 5, 10 a.m.- 9:30 p.m., Free.

Las Palmas (7356 Manchester Road; 314-645-3364): Las Palmas will have outdoor music and live music inside throughout the day. There will also be drink specials and giveaways. Sat., May 5, 11 a.m.- 1 p.m., Free.

Maya Cafe (2726 Sutton Avenue; 314-781-4774): Maya Cafe is celebrating Cinco de Mayo (or "Maya") Thurs., May 3 to Sat., May 5 with food and drink specials. 5-10 p.m., Free.

Milagro Modern Mexican (20 Allen Avenue; 314-962-4300): Half the parking lot will be closed for an outdoor party. There will be a taco eating contest, Mexican street food, margaritas, horchava snow cones, beer and live Latin beats by DJ Alejan. Sat., May 5, 12 p.m.- 10 p.m., Free.

Mi Ranchito (887 Kingsland Avenue University City, 314-863-1880): Mi Ranchito is celebrating Cinco de Mayo with food and drink specials all day. Sat., May 5, 11 a.m.-12 a.m., Free.

Nachomama's (9643 Manchester Road Rock Hill; 314-961-9110): Enjoy margaritas and music on Nachomama's outdoor patio. Sat., May 5, Free.

Rosalita's Cantina (1229 Washington Avenue; 314-621-2700): Rosalita's Cantina will be closing down Washington Avenue between Tucker and 13th Street for a two-day Cinco de Mayo celebration. There will be a large tent party with tables and an outdoor bar, live music, drink and food specials and activities from 5 to 12 p.m. on Fri., May 4, and from 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. on Sat., May 5. Free.

Senor Pique (14870 Manchester Road; 636-394-3455): Z107.7 FM will be broadcasting live and there will be live music from Rio Rock Band starting at 1 p.m. on Sat., May 5. Tequila Cazadores Girls and Bacardi Girls will be partying at the fiesta, which begins at 11 a.m. and includes food and drink specials, live music, giveaways and prizes. Free.

Siete Luminarias (2818 Cherokee Street; 314-932-1333): Dine on pambazos, flautas, tamales and much more at Siete Luminarias Cinco de Mayo event on Sat., May 5, from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Taqueria la Pasadita (23356 Woodson Road; 314-428-3832): For the Cinco de Mayo fiesta Taqueria la Pasadita will have drink and food specials all day. Sat., May 5, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., Free.
