Today, local grocer Dierbergs hosts the grand opening of its newest store, a super center-sized space it's dubbed The Market at Des Peres (1080 Lindemann Road; 314-238-0400). Located at Manchester and Lindemann Roads in Des Peres, Dierbergs will host a ribbon cutting for the new store at 8:35 a.m. followed by its grand opening at 9 a.m.

Grand opening fanfare includes live entertainment by singer Carl Lawson, who will sing the national anthem and "Good Bless the U.S.A.," as well as food samples, cooking demonstrations and special promotions and discounts on its merchandise. On Saturday, August 4, from 12 to 2 p.m., The Market at Des Peres will host a meet-and-greet with Looney Tunes characters from Six Flags St. Louis.

But special events and grand opening specials aside, how does The Market at Des Peres distinguish itself from other Dierbergs stores? Apparently by a lot.

The Market at Des Peres features a second-level mezzanine restaurant, the Mezz, complete with complimentary wi-fi for dine-in customers. Specials at the Mezz include all you can eat pancakes every Saturday from 7 to 11 a.m. and live music every Friday and Saturday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The Mezz also features a wide range of menus, such as Bob's Signature Smokehouse BBQ, Bento Asian Grill and Sushi Bar, a sandwich menu including paninis and pizzettas and hand-tossed salads. Customers also have the option to sample wine before purchasing a bottle via the store's wine dispenser, while its cheesemonger -- not, apparently, distant relative to the Hamburglar -- is on-site to be, "your guide to the world of cheese." Additionally, the Mezz serves wine by the glass and bottled beer from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. each day.

Aside from the restaurant, The Market at Des Peres includes a farmer's market hall with a selection of locally grown produce and Dierbergs School of Cooking Culinary Events Center, which will offer cooking courses as well as event space for private parties and gatherings. Gut Check will report back will more information on the store -- and perhaps how it stacks up to Schnucks' huge, similarly structured store down the street on Manchester Road -- as we learn it.
