We first heard about Vernon's BBQ & Catering (6707 Vernon Avenue, University City; 314-620-4231) late this spring. At the time, owner Matt Stiffelman told us he hoped to hold a soft opening of his barbecue joint within a few weeks of our conversation.

Several months later, Vernon's debut finally approaches.

Stiffelman tells Gut Check today that the permitting process took longer than he expected. However, Vernon's now has an occupancy permit, and Stiffelman expects to train his staff over the couple weeks. He expects to open this month.

While we're on the subject of barbecue in University City: There have been no signs of life in the two weeks since we learned that Sir's Bar-B-Que (6714 Olive Boulevard, University City; 314-499-3461) might have closed again. The restaurant's phone number does still remain connected, though we haven't been able to speak with anyone as of yet.

While Sir's has pulled a Lazarus act before, things don't look good this time around.
