Modesto Tapas Bar & Restaurant (5257 Shaw Avenue, 63110) is celebrating its twelfth birthday this weekend with a special Spanish barbecue menu. Modesto was the first full-scale authentically Spanish tapas place in town, and one on The Hill, no less. Gut Check spoke to owner Brendan Marsden to see what they've got in store for the anniversary celebration on July 12 and 13.

Executive chef Carlos Hernandez will be grilling outside all day, which he only does about once a year. "He's making a really nice rabbit sausage, which we haven't done in a long time. Rabbit is a very commonly eaten ingredient in Spain, so that's kind of his creation, but it's also based on traditional Spanish sausage," Marsden says.

The anniversary menu also includes costillas asadas (pork ribs) with quince barbecue sauce, grilled scallions with romesco sausce, chicken chorizo skewers with smoked paprika aioli, rabbit salchicha (sausage) with tarragon Dijon mustard sauce, and a vegetable skewer with zucchini, yellow squash, yellow onion, and green and red bell peppers with truffle mushroom sauce.

"We don't typically do ribs, and every time we do, they're immensely popular. I think the sausage and the ribs are the two highlights of the menu," Marsden says. Modesto's regular menu will also be available.

Not convinced yet? Everyone who goes to Modesto from now until August 3 will be entered to win two tickets to the Real Madrid vs. Inter Milan soccer game on August 10 at the Edward Jones Dome. The prize also includes a dinner for two at Modesto. The drawing will be held August 5.

"We're really grateful that we've been here for twelve years," says Marsden. "We're looking forward to the celebration and hope to see a lot of our regular customers. It should be fun!"
