Kirkwood Station Brewing Co. Soon Available in Cans

Kirkwood Station Brewing Co (105 East Jefferson; 314-966-2739) is currently only available on draft (not a bad gig) but is planning distribution in cans in the next few weeks. Brewmaster Dave Johnson tells Gut Check that canning is the logical step in getting Kirkwood Station beers into more hands.

Kirkwood Station opened in 2006 as Wm. D. Alandale Brewing Co. and changed its name to Highlands Brewing Company in 2009. It faced legal action from Highland Brewing Co. in Asheville, North Carolina, though, and adopted its current name in 2011 thanks to a suggestion from a Facebook fan.

Kirkwood Station will offer its India Pale Ale and Buckwheat Berry in cans; so far no beers are available in bottle form. Johnson says the brewery plans to start filling cans the week of March 17. From they're they'll go to the distributor and then hit supermarket and liquor store shelves. The cans will be available in sixteen ounce four-packs, retailing for about $8-9.99.

"We've been distributing for about a year, and to sell more beer, you basically have to get more out there," Johnson says. The upside? "Cans are 100 percent recyclable, they don't let any light or air in -- the oxygen levels are very low. You can take them to the beach, the pool, the golf course."
