Local Harvest Cafe Offers Downtown a Sumptuous Vegetarian Feast

Overview: After opening its first location in Tower Grove, Local Harvest Cafe wanted a bigger presence in the downtown area. So the cafe opened its second location a few years later in the Old Post Office at Ninth and Olive streets. Though the downtown location is only open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, expect the cafe to be open for weekend brunch in the coming months, and be on the look out for some new "comfort" foods on the menu.

Highlights: The banh mi sandwich ($8.75) is a twist on your normal lunch sub: organic sesame baked tofu, kimchi slaw, cilantro and lime are layered on a semolina roll and served with Billy Goat chips. If chips aren't your thing then swap them out for another one of the cafe's side dishes, like the quinoa salad ($2.50-$3.50).

Though we don't often feature salads, Local Harvest Cafe's Mediterranean salad ($9.50) is stacked with organic Ah!Zeefa lentil dip, feta, tomato, red onion, roasted red peppers, cucumbers, Kalamata olives and balsamic vinaigrette. The salad does not only look colorfully appetizing, but it tastes delicious as well.

The cafe's vegetarian customers also go for the "9th Street Veggie Burger" ($8.50): a black-bean patty, housemade hummus, red onions, sliced pickles, greens and roasted garlic aioli.
