Strange Donuts Announces Plans for Second Location

Strange Donuts (2709 Sutton Boulevard, Maplewood; 314-932-5851) has been on everybody's lips (quite literally) even before it opened in October. The Kickstarter-funded project made a name for itself via social media, delicious doughnuts and crazy collaborations. For its next trick, co-owner Corey Smale confirmed that Strange Donuts is ready to open a second location.

"There's going to be another Strange Donuts, and it'll be here pretty soon," Smale says, though he won't disclose the location. "We're super close to having final revisions of what we have to sign, so I don't want to say."

"I think so much of it is the collaboration -- doing thing that promote not only ourselves but other people who are doing creative shit. I think that's doing a lot for us," Smale says. "Last weekend we did our biggest weekend ever with Bogart's. The doughnuts are really on point right now, the vibe is right. We're just super thankful."

In the meantime, Strange Donuts is making some improvements to its Maplewood location. Smale and his partners are considering adding another door. They're also getting help from Barry Greenberg at Architectural Design Guild to redesign the front; Smale says it'll be less black and more creative and inspired.

Smale admits that it's pretty fast, but he and partner Jason Bockman are more of the go-big-or-go-home type. "Jason and I are firm believers in, if we're going to do this, let's go hard," he says. "We're super close, I'd say 95 percent close. It'll be smaller than our current store, I can say that. We're aiming for smaller -- we want the experience to be even crazier."

We didn't think that was possible, but we're excited to see what these mad scientists have in store for St. Louis.
