St Louis is a town of die-hard deli-goers, and everyone has a favorite spot. In fact, two south side delis -- Mom's Deli (4412 Jamieson Avenue; 314-64-1198) and LeGrand's Market & Catering (4414 Donovan Avenue; 314-353-4059) -- have a bit of a competition for bragging rights among their customers. It can get ugly.

But why so much hate when there are delicious sandwiches to be eaten? Consider the "Mom's Special" at Mom's Deli, with its layers of turkey, roast beef and ham shaved so thin it's like prosciutto. Mom's piles on crisp lettuce, thick slices of tomatoes, onions, pickles and Mun-chee cheese (don't ask, just enjoy). The highlight of the sandwich is Mom's homemade tangy Thousand Island dressing that the sandwich makers slather on both the top and bottom of the crusty French bread. With a sandwich this glorious, how can eaters be filled with anything but love?

Don't fret, LeGrand's lovers. We will check out its namesake sandwich too.
