Annie Moons' Banana-Split Muffins: Tasty Cakes with a Side of Comic Books

Posted By on Mon, Dec 8, 2014 at 10:00 AM

Welcome to Sugar High, a series devoted solely to spotlighting the best ways to sate a sweet tooth in St. Louis. We'll sample the best the city has to offer at restaurants, bakeries and holes-in-the-wall, and provide some insight on how these confections are made along the way.

Annie Moons (4001 Utah Street; 314-296-3300) set roots in Tower Grove South in June 2013, serving up from-scratch sandwiches, baked goods, coffee and eventually, even comic books. Co-owner Roxanne Cypret offers something a little different every day out of her kitchen for the cafe's counter top, but visitors can expect to find variations on classic grab-and-go treats including scones, cookies the size of your head, and petite quick-bread cakes we can't get enough of: Annie Moons' muffins.

The base of Cypret's muffins begins with a standardized batter she created after experimenting with different recipes she liked -- one that produces a moist, fluffy crumb with just a hint of sweetness. Every morning, she plays with ingredients on hand, stuffing and filling the mix with everything from fresh fruit to shaved coconut and infused simple syrups. On any given day, visitors can find flavors including but not limited to blueberry, strawberry poppy, raspberry chocolate and oatmeal raisin.

The standout from our visit was the banana split, a muffin studded with strawberry, pineapple, banana and chocolate-chip pieces -- a combination Cypret says is like having a sundae for breakfast. Each baked good at Annie Moons is priced affordably and sized appropriately -- you can have two and not feel completely stuffed -- so grab a few to snack on while perusing the wealth of fun comic books and more next door.
