Like the sleek, lovely restaurant from whence they come, Whitebox Eatery's (176 Carondelet Plaza, Clayton; 314-862-2802) granola pancakes are a sight to behold. Jewel-colored mixed berries set in cloudlike dollops of whipped cream adorn the golden cakes, and a generous sprinkle of cinnamon-flecked granola makes one's mouth water just from looking. It's a visual breakfast masterpiece that tastes every bit as delicious as it looks.

Whitebox Eatery's pancakes are thinner than their traditional counterparts, so they get crispy, caramelized edges. They would be excellent plain, but the Clayton breakfast and lunch spot tops the cakes with seasonal fruit (on my visit, berries; currently, pears), vanilla whipped cream and -- what may be the dish's best component -- housemade cinnamon granola. This topping tastes fresh from the oven and gives the cakes a baking-spice crunch. It's worth dragging oneself out of bed to enjoy this excellent morning treat.
