No matter how many layers one dons, it's nearly impossible to stay warm in this frigid February weather -- unless one heads to Death in the Afternoon (808 Chestnut Street; 314-621-3236) for a bowl of its steaming hot ramen.

Death in the Afternoon's version of this classic Japanese dish is a kaleidoscope of textures and flavors. The ingredients change seasonally: On one visit, the tonkatsu version consisted of tender pork loin and belly steeped with noodles, exotic mushrooms and a soy-soaked soft-boiled egg in a delicate housemade broth. Whatever the exact contents, one thing remains the same: This dish is a searing-hot bowl of comfort, made even more spectacular by the views of a winter wonderland: Citygarden.
