Some desserts simply stand the test of time, and the warm apple strudel at the the Feasting Fox (4200 South Grand Boulevard; 314-352-3500) is no exception. Chef Joe Feltmann, who has headed up the kitchen the German-themed restaurant for fourteen years, says this classic has held its spot on the dessert menu for as long as he can remember.

In his version of the European treat, sliced apples get warmly spiced with cinnamon, sugar and ground cloves, plus a bit of flour to bind the filling together. Instead of the traditional bread-like pastry jacket, he utilizes delicate sheets of phyllo dough to lend a light, flaky contrast to the tender apples. Served warm with a generous drizzle of creme anglaise, it's a familiar and comforting end to any meal.

Besides the apple strudel, look for more dessert options at the Feasting Fox including housemade a Black Forest torte ($3.95) and German chocolate cake ($3.95) -- all available à la mode.
