By now, most people who have heard of Ferguson Burger Bar & More (9120 West Florissant Avenue, Ferguson; 314-388-0424) can tell its tale by heart about the husband and wife who cleared out their savings to open a restaurant two days before unarmed teenager Mike Brown was fatally shot by then-Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson. The restaurant has become more than a place to eat -- it has been a gathering place for Brown's grieving family members, a must-stop place for politicians and, most important, a symbol of the community's persevering spirit.

In the midst of everything that has transpired, owners Charles and Kizzie Davis have turned their signature offering, the "Garbage Burger," into a St. Louis classic. The secret to this quintessential diner burger is Kizzie's special blend of spices that are mixed into the ground beef. The patties are grilled on a flat-top and served on a buttery bun with crisp lettuce, thick-sliced white onions, mayonnaise, American cheese and a fried egg. Diners can opt for a satisfying single or a humongous double -- though the latter will raise Kizzie's eyebrow and be greeted with an "Are you sure?" If Ferguson Burger Bar is a symbol of its community, then the "Garbage Burger" is the restaurant's delicious emblem.
