The Colonel has some stiff competition, and it doesn't come from the trendy fried chicken hot spots that have cropped up around town. Instead, his most formidable contender comes in the form of the "KFT" at Gooseberries (2754 Chippewa Street; 314-577-6363); shockingly, it's not even chicken.

Gooseberries owners Kim Bond and Ross Lessor wanted to open a place that would appeal to both vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. They accomplished this with the "KFT." Short for "Krispy Fried Tofu," this delectable vegan treat is Gooseberries' answer to chicken fingers. Bond and Lessor coat thick slices of tofu with flaky breading and a blend of thirteen different spices -- two more than the Colonel. The tofu comes out of a deep fryer looking and tasting like extra-crispy chicken. Vegans and carnivores can agree -- it's finger licking good.
