Welcome to Sugar High, a series devoted solely to spotlighting the best ways to sate a sweet tooth in St. Louis. We'll sample the best the city has to offer at restaurants, bakeries and holes-in-the-wall, and provide some insight on how these confections are made along the way.

Nourish by Hollyberry (10037 Manchester Avenue; 314-835-9196) opened in Warson Woods on April 1, bringing a newfound cafe and grab-and-go market aspect to chef-owner Holly Cunningham's catering company. The longtime from-scratch cook has her roots in sweets, originally kicking off her brand as a baked-good business in 1998. While things have grown and changed over the years, one simple, sweet staple on her menu has stayed the same for more than a decade, and patrons can still get it today: a Hollyberry cookie, paired with a cold mug of milk.

"We started the company featuring our cookies and dessert bars, and we are still known for them today," Cunningham says. "We use the original recipes we started with seventeen years ago because they are too good to touch."

Cunningham got her start in the kitchen growing up with three home bakers -- her mother, grandmother and aunt. These days, she has a team of pastry chefs to bring those classic recipes to life. Hollyberry cookies are made in small batches, hand-scooped for an array of offerings. Outside of getting paired with a cold beverage at the cafe, the treats also come packaged individually as well as frozen in dough balls for at-home baking.

Perhaps the most quintessential choice is "Dave's Double Chip," named after a family friend who wrote the recipe. The chewy cookie is filled with semi-sweet and white-chocolate chips, made with simple ingredients including vanilla, butter and sugar. Besides cookies, Nourish by Hollyberry offers an array of homestyle desserts including grasshopper cake and strawberry tarts. Have some in house or enjoy it in your own home. Either way, be sure to wash it down with a cold mug of milk for posterity's sake.
