  • Goodbye, Gringo.

Out with one Mexican-inspired joint — in with another.

That's the news out of the Central West End this morning, as St. Louis Magazine reports that Chris Sommers has sold his taco concept, Gringo, to the owners of the more successful Mission Taco.

Sommers, the restaurateur behind the Pi chain, will return to focusing on pizza, while the Tilford brothers, who own Mission, will apparently continue their steady march toward world domination (or at least domination of St. Louis' growing Mexican food scene). A win-win, apparently.

Both Mission Taco and Gringo opened in 2013, but had far different fates. Faced with bad reviews (including one in this newspaper), Gringo brought on a new chef and retooled its menu, while Mission Taco won raves. It subsequently opened a second location — with a packed house in Soulard joining the original packed house on the Delmar Loop.

Gringo will close Sunday; the space will reportedly reopen as Mission Taco within six to eight weeks.
