The University City barbecue shack that RFT readers chose as the city's most underrated has closed its doors.

Vernon's BBQ (6707 Vernon Avenue, University City; 314-726-1227) first opened its doors in November 2012. Located just a few blocks north of the Loop, the unassuming location served up top-notch barbecue, in addition to more unusual offerings like smoked tofu and corned beef.

Owners Matt Stiffelman and Tim Zolman had previously worked at Super Smokers BBQ together. They prided themselves on gluten-free sauces — and Stiffelman recently gained national recognition for his attempt at kosher barbecue. They were also featured on the Food Network's Eat Sleep Barbecue last year.

But a sign posted to the window this weekend said that the restaurant had closed.

"It has been an honor serving our amazing customers," the sign said. "Thank you."

Stiffelman did not respond to our call seeking comment yesterday. We'll update this post if we hear back.
