In late January, we got a tip from an RFT reader that Bing Bing (567A Melville Avenue, University City; 314-669-9229) was no longer keeping regular hours, and might have closed. But when we visited, there was no sign of permanent closure and condiments were still out on the tables. When we asked workers at the neighboring businesses, they said they'd been told Bing Bing would reopen in two weeks.

It never happened.

Instead, a sign posted in Bing Bing's window says that Tasti-Tea is opening in its spot. It is unclear whether that business is under the same ownership or when exactly it will be opening.

A flyer on site suggests the shop will serve bubble tea, the cold and frothy drink made with sweet milk and tea, with sweet tapioca pearls at the bottom. Intriguingly, the sign for Tasti-Tea also features photos of street food treats like those sold at Bing Bing: noodle bowls and also crepes in addition to beverages.

Tasti-Tea did not respond to messages seeking more information about its plans. The Post-Dispatch, which first broke the news of Bing Bing's closing, had no more luck than we did. (Bing Bing's owners have also not responded to messages seeking comment.)

The first restaurant from young entrepreneurs Yong Liu and Yijun Chen, Bing Bing served the Shanghai-style crepes that are all the rage in China. It was a new concept to St. Louis.

Bubble tea, however, has been on the Loop for quite a few years now. St. Louis Bubble Tea and Corner 17 have long served the beverage favorite.

More recently, in May 2017, a chain called Kung Fu Tea made an application with the city to open at 6662 Delmar. Nearly two years later, though, the storefront remains dark.
