A new option for Indian food is popping up in south city — but how long it stays depends on the response it gets.

Colleen Clawson, the chef and co-owner of Milque Toast Bar, will be opening Babaxavi at 3701 Jefferson on March 20. The pop-up eatery is named after her ten-year-old son Xavier, who has grown up with both of his parents in the restaurant business.

"This is a personal project for me," Clawson says. "I love making this food, but it is also to pay tribute to Xavier. Instead of painting a portrait of my son, he gets an entire restaurant named after him."

She adds, "He has always been so patient and understanding with all the time that goes into the restaurant business."

As first reported by St. Louis Magazine, Babaxavi will be located in the former home of Spare No Rib and the short-lived Champs on Jefferson. The current lease is owned by the owners of Spare No Rib and Egg, and runs until June. Clawson is subleasing the space until then and is excited to see how the neighborhood responds to the cuisine.

She notes that previous Indian dinners at Milque Toast Bar have always been a huge hit. Beyond that, the corner restaurant's patio and outdoor bar upstairs will be perfect for the upcoming warmer months, she says, with natural light and rich colors. "The upstairs is really beautiful," says Clawson.

The full bar downstairs will dispense both Indian and American beers on draft, while the menu will consist of a mix of Anglo-Indian and traditional Indian-style dishes, with small, mid-sized and large entrees. Diners will be able to try everything from tikka masala to a lamb curry burger and mulligatawny soup.

Babaxavi will be open Friday through Monday from 4 to 10 p.m.
