Fields Foods (1706 Washington Avenue) will open its doors tonight in the Downtown West neighborhood, with a grand opening from 5 to 10 p.m.

The local grocer opened its Lafayette Square flagship in 2014; this is its second location after that. Its focus is on eliminating food deserts and creating jobs throughout the city. According to owner Chris Goodson, about 80 percent of the employees are city residents.

While the shop has a smaller footprint than traditional groceries, it's got everything you're likely to want. There's a large selection of pesticide-free, non-GMO, organic, gluten-free and natural products, as well as a cafe area where you can sit and drink wine and beer or enjoy a meal from the grab-n-go section.

And not only is street parking available but there is a free surface parking lot with 30 spots to the west of the building.

Goodson says the company will be opening two additional locations in 2019. The Delmar and Euclid location will be opening very soon, and the Dogtown location is set to open in the summer.

This location is located on the first floor of the Monogram on Washington, a luxury apartment complex. Residents of the complex will have their own key card to a back entrance of the store. "They don't even have to leave the building. They can shop in their pajamas," says Goodson.

Goodson is determined to fill the city back up with people. Eliminating food deserts, he says, is one of the first steps in doing so.

Fields Foods will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
