'The Summer I Turned Pretty' Is Getting a Movie.

Are you Team Conrad, or Team Jeremiah? Nevermind. Doesn’t matter. Team Jenny Han has announced the real bombshell: we’re getting a Summer I Turned Pretty movie! The hit TV obsession is graduating and moving on to the silver screen. Will I be dressing up when I go see it the day it opens? Honestly, probably not. But I’ll have good intentions until I decide I’d rather be comfy and not get popcorn schmutz on the dry-clean-only clothes.

For those of us who read Jenny Han’s YA novels, watching The Summer I Turned Pretty has been a delightful experience. The plot centers around Belly Conklin and her endless summer love triangle between Conrad and Jeremiah, and it’s been running since 2022 on Prime Video. Season 3 just wrapped up, and now we know we’re getting a feature film out of the deal, so we can enjoy the story a little while longer. The breakout YA romance hit has fueled endless TikTok edits and a fandom intensity that clearly took notes from the Swifties. It hasn’t won any big-name awards (YET!), but it has consistently ranked as one of Prime’s most popular summer shows.

If you don’t want spoilers, just skip this paragraph. Season 3 ended with Belly finally making up her mind and choosing Conrad. Jeremiah’s character has taken some heat, but actor Gavin Casalegno was quick to defend his fictional persona. Belly’s “choosing herself” moment was a beautiful way to highlight Jenny Han’s broader theme of self-discovery, and Taylor Swift’s tunes provided the perfect emotional backdrop, with Dress and Out of the Woods heavily featured during the big moments.

The movie announcement dropped right after the finale, but the movie itself isn’t the best news. The best news? Jenny Han is going to be writing and directing the whole shebang herself! In quite the career glow-up, this will be Han’s directorial debut for a feature film. Not too shabby, considering that her first foray into film and television was the Netflix adaptation of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. Han will officially be a triple threat: novelist, showrunner, and director.

So here’s who’s confirmed to be part of the movie: Lola Tung (Belly) and Christopher Briney (Conrad). …ok, so that’s it so far, but the news has only been out for a little while, so there will be more confirmations rolling in soon. Jenny Han has promised a big milestone storyline, and fans are already speculating about which characters will be back to help bring that storyline to life.

There are plans in the works for a theatrical release, which would make it the first time this franchise leaves the world of streaming in favor of actual theaters. There’s no release date set yet, but with teasers for a future milestone moment, that could point towards a graduation, wedding, or something else equally belly-flipping. With the movie being promoted for Prime Video and in theaters, that’s a big double win for the fandom—even without a release date.

So. Dust off your Cousins Beach merch, because it looks like this summer fling won’t be ending anytime soon. Team Conrad, Team Jeremiah, or Team Popcorn… which side are you on? You’ve got time to weigh your options, but the countdown begins once the release date drops!
