The Fog. Fog: creepy. But lepers: creepier. Or so assumes the premise of The Fog, about residents of a NoCal village who intentionally ran a whole boatload of skin-afflicted folks into the shoreline's rocky crags. But exactly 100 years later, the ghosts of the lepers (wrapped in spooky fog, natch) are back, and they're looking for anyone descended from the town's founders. Saint Ralph. (PG-13) It's easy to be of two minds about Michael McGowan's relentless heartwarmer, in which a hormonal 14-year-old (Adam Butcher) comes to believe that winning the Boston Marathon is the magic he needs to rouse his cancer-stricken mother from a coma. Set in 1954 in Ontario, it's a curious mixture of family values and raunchy adolescent humor, and there's no escaping director McGowan's dogged charm offensive: Little Ralph comes off like Billy Elliot on steroids. Still, this an energetic movie that can be truly hilarious in spots, and it captures perfectly the oppressive atmosphere of a Catholic boys' school in the '50s. Campbell Scott and Gordon Pinsent are the two priests who would shape the skinny hero's future, and Michael Kanev plays his mischievous friend Chester. (Bill Gallo) PF
