Edgar G. Ulmer: The Man Off-Screen. (Not Rated) Weaving together imaginatively presented interviews and film clips, director Michael Palm traces the long career of the complex and ambitious Edgar G. Ulmer, a.k.a. "The King of the B's." Exaggerating his silent-film accomplishments, Ulmer yearned for bigger budgets and better projects, all the while creating astonishing cult films from little more than fog and wind and creepy music. Through interviews captured as Ulmer often shot, with rear-screen projection or a tracking camera, Ulmer's daughter Arianne, directors Wim Wenders, Peter Bogdanovich, Joe Dante, Roger Corman and John Landis, among others, describe Ulmer's working methods and conflicts. Most impressive, the many clips from his 49 films confirm Ulmer's talent for ingenious, resourceful storytelling. In English and German with English subtitles.
