Ana Popovic picked up her father's guitar at the age of fifteen and learned to play the blues behind the Milosevic curtain in Belgrade. As NATO bombs fell over her homeland, Popovic took up residence in the Netherlands and traveled to Memphis, Tennessee, to cut her first album, Hush!, for the German label Ruf. Following the lead of post-Stevie Ray Vaughan aces like Tab Benoit and Susan Tedeschi, Popovic's playing is flashy and fast. This gives space to her soul-soaked vocals, as raw and stinging as a fistful of green onions, and songwriting that's rarely so direct and memorable in a guitar player this smoking hot.
