Remember the soundtrack to Lost in Translation, which featured the atmospheric ambling of Squarepusher and Air, the shoegazing strums of My Bloody Valentine and the Jesus and Mary Chain, and the Japanese jams of Happy End? Well, Zen enthusiasts, the NYC ambient-pop group Asobi Seksu combines qualities of all of those bands. While the quartet is unable to escape comparisons to Pizzicato Five — lead singer Yuki Chikudate croons sweet pop melodies that are half in English, half in Japanese — Asobi Seksu makes its own path by delivering reverb distortion and establishing a magnetic, rhythmic vibe of trans-Pacific harmony.
