George Brock has been a St. Louisan for some 50 years now. But there's still a lot of Mississippi in his music, a raw, raucous kind of blues very different from the slick stuff purveyed by younger generations. An enthusiastic showman known for his colorful suits and spontaneous excursions from the stage into the audience, Brock is a genuine blues elder whose harmonica and vocal styles recall the '50s heyday of Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, without resorting to outright imitation. This Thursday he celebrates the release of his new CD, which was recorded in Clarksdale, Mississippi, earlier this year. It's a rough-hewn, ragged-but-right shot of juke-joint boogie -- ranging from idiosyncratic to almost anarchic, yet packing the authentic punch of a Mason jar of good corn liquor.
