Bleed the Dream

Forget tats and safety pins: What's really punk rock is Bleed the Dream drummer Scott Gottlieb playing every drum track on his band's full-length debut, Built by Blood -- at the same time he was suffering from the bone cancer that eventually cost him his life in April. Despite this tragedy, the Los Angeles band is soldiering onward and building on the momentum created by its appearances on this year's Taste of Chaos and Warped tours. Just listen to Blood, a skillful distillation of bee-stung punk riffs, evocative harmonies and hardcore-lite rock hooks that manages to be genuinely emotional -- and not mind-numbingly emo.
