The son of a Nashville legend, Bobby Bare Jr. spent his youth bucking his father's country legacy, recording under the name Bare Jr. and courting an audience just south of the AC/DC-Skynyrd-Motörhead triangle. But he's aged gracefully and independently and retained his witty self-flagellations and bad-boyish charm, even as he moves further into indie-pop territory and lets long-time bandmate Deanna Varagona skronk the shit out of the baritone sax. He still loves classic rock — in the form of Quiet Riot, America and Bread covers — but he also knows how to craft his own country and pop melodies, by filtering them through sweet, gummy phrasing and psycho-surrealist lyrics. He remains one of the most musically interesting enfant terribles in rock & roll.
