Seeing saxophonist Candy Dulfer's glamorous promo photos, one might be tempted to attribute her commercial success solely to her good looks. But make no mistake — Dulfer's got skills. The daughter of Dutch jazzman Hans Dulfer, she began playing sax in grade school, formed her first band at age fourteen and by age nineteen had caught the attention of Prince, who put her in the video for "Partyman." In the '90s, Dulfer became a star of the then-nascent smooth-jazz radio format. Her bluesy alto-sax playing remains rooted in the soul/jazz tradition of Hank Crawford, Maceo Parker and David Sanborn, while her energetic live performances emphasize uptempo, danceable beats.
