Jonathan Richman led the proto-punks in the Modern Lovers. Arto Lindsay gave us the avant-pop of the Ambitious Lovers. A Philadelphia power-pop quartet upped the ante by calling themselves the Bigger Lovers. The Vancouver-based quintet Clumsy Lovers may not have as boastful a name as the others, but they rarely sound clumsy on their most recent album, Smart Kid. The band uses all acoustic instruments (fiddle, mandolin, banjo) and mixes in elements of folk, bluegrass and Celtic music, but these are simply pop-rock songs performed without amplification.
