Besides being the voice of Fattback and a beloved member of the St. Louis music community, the late Dave Hagerty was also a staunch supporter of the non-profit Self-Sufficient St. Louis. According to the organization's head, Langen Neubacher (who's also a local musician), the SSSTL is "dedicated to empowering neighborhoods to become self-sufficient by building community and utilizing sustainable living." Its newest project is a community garden in the side yard at Off Broadway, which will be named in Hagerty's honor. The community-sustained garden will feature fruit trees and two garden beds suitable for herbs and vegetables; in the spirit of the communal project, anyone is invited to work with and benefit from the garden. The SSSTL is holding a community work day on Sunday, October 17, from 2 to 6 p.m. It's open to the public, and people are invited to stop by to look at the plot or to dig in and help develop it. For more information, email Neubacher.
