Deftones Then and Now: A Live St. Louis Video and a New, Free MP3

Yesterday, Deftones released its new single, "Rocket Skates," for free via its official website. That the song is even being released is a victory: While recording a new album called Eros in late 2008, bassist Chi Cheng was in a serious car accident. (His recovery is slow but steady; details here.) Deftones eventually ended up scrapping the album in favor of recording new music, with Quicksand's Sergio Vega helping out on bass. If "Skates" is any indication, this new LP, Diamond Eyes -- which is out May 18 -- will completely obliterate every other so-called "rock" act out there. Seriously -- calling it "heavy" doesn't do it justice.

Coincidentally, live video of Deftones filmed at the Galaxy in 1996 just surfaced on YouTube. This was at the height of the band's initial surge of recognition, after the release of its debut, Adrenaline. Even then, they were an insane live act. Enjoy.
