Hear this, fans of early-'90s East Coast hip-hop and fans of looped jazz samples, loping bass lines and subtle beats: The Digable Planets have returned. Rappers of the "droppin' knowledge" variety, Butterfly, Ladybug and Doodlebug are remembered by the masses for 1993's omnipresent single, "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)." But the Digable Planets helped solidify a pre-bling and machismo-free style. (How many modern rappers would adopt a name like Butterfly or write a song about the complexities of abortion laws?) And it's not just what they say, but how they say it: When the Planets toss around the words "smooth" and "slick," they're not just blowing smoke in a coffee shop.
