Call them morbid, call them pale: Dimmu Borgir's members have several qualities in common with nearly concurrent St. Louis visitor Morrissey. Both acts lyrically fantasize about acts of violence (Moz, kicks in the eye; Dimmu, the slaughter of the entire human race), and both play melancholic songs that fare best in dark clubs. Alas, many fans first saw this Norwegian sextet at Ozzfest 2004, where amphitheaters swallowed its symphonic grandeur and sunlight melted its corpse-toned cosmetics. Dimmu Borgir uses its scratchy howls and thick power chords to conjure gloomy moods, but with lush orchestral overtures and operatic vocals, its concerts are as surprisingly classy as they are creepy.
