And so the debate rages on: Eric Clapton is God — on that much we can all agree — but God of what? Roots rock, as ushered in by his groups the Yardbirds and John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers? The psychedelic guitarwork pioneered by Cream? The adult-contemporary pop of his recent solo years? And is Derek and the Dominos' "Bell Bottom Blues," in fact, the single saddest song ever written?
