Fishbone with Slightly Stoopid

You might remember Fishbone from their appearance in Back to the Beach, backing Annette Funicello as she sang a strange version of "Jamaica Ska." You might also remember them as the musicians who influenced Sublime, No Doubt and St. Louis hometown heroes the Urge in their various mixes of ska, punk, rock and pop.

Fishbone has always been an anomaly: an all-black band -- without a trace of hip-hop -- in an era when rock & roll had become completely white; a ska band after Two-Tone and before the Third Wave revival; a band both politically liberal and deeply religious. Fishbone is a band that no one ever predicted would exist, and surely no one would have guessed it'd be around twenty years after its birth. Whether tearing through a minute-long punk rant or a lengthy jam, Fishbone still gets crowds moving -- even though it's now opening for the bands it inspired.
