Veteran artists receiving career makeovers at the hands of hotshot producers isn't exactly a new trend (see: Johnny Cash/Rick Rubin and Loretta Lynn/Jack White), but something feels right about Al Green's latest resurgence. The soul legend (and ordained reverend) recorded Lay It Down with Roots producer/keyboardist James Poyser and drummer ?uestlove, and their orchestrations revive a bit of that gritty, sweaty sound that helped Green define Memphis soul in the '60s and '70s. The album brings old soul and neo-soul together as Corinne Bailey Rae, John Legend and Anthony Hamilton drop in for duets. Fellow soul-survivor Gladys Knight shares the bill.
