I'm a big fan of birthdays -- especially when it comes to music. Altered Images' "Happy Birthday," a poppier tune by the Scottish new-wavers, famously heard in one of my favorite '80s teen movies, Sixteen Candles. "Birthday" by the Sugarcubes, Bjork's pre-solo-career band. Oh heck, even the Beatles song "Birthday" is pretty rad.
Add Happy Happy Birthday To Me -- a.k.a. the Athens, Georgia-based label of local twee heroes Bunnygrunt -- to my favorite birthday entities as well. You see, the label just announced the 2007 version of its singles club (which is basically a seven-inch-of-the-month-club, in other words) -- and it's a real doozy.
Details are here, but the local relevance involves the fact that Bunnygrunt's single is backed by a song by Phil Wilson of the June Brides -- a legendary 1980s British pop band whose "We Belong" Bunnygrunt covered for a tribute, which I wrote about here.
Other bands participating in the club include the Minders, Of Montreal, Apples in Stereo, Tullycraft and All Girl Summer Fun Band, among others. The label starts taking orders at midnight tonight. Get on it!
