Bring It On! (Hellcat Records)

HorrorPops

Despite ghoulishly themed songs, coif-donning band members and horror-ific go-go dancers, the HorrorPops have always maintained that they are not a psychobilly band. In fact, their second album, Bring It On!, fleshes out their sound -- and helps them step out of the shadow cast by guitarist Kim Nekroman (also of the Nekromantix). The heavy drilling guitars of Nekroman and new addition Geoff Kresge (Tiger Army, AFI) point the band in the right direction, while bassist/lead singer Patricia Day's bass licks particularly shine through on "Crawl Straight Home." But while On! awards composing credits to all members -- the HorrorPops' previous CD, Hell Yeah!, was scripted by Nekroman and devil-doll Day -- the latter steals the show. Many of her songs are love-torn ballads, and none are more pointed than the rolling desperado tune "S.O.B.," in which Day narrates her vengeance against an old lover and his new woman.
