When they hear the word screamo, most folks may think of big-name teenybopper acts such as the Used or Senses Fail. But for Philadelphia's Hot Cross, it's a different story. Formed by alumni of post-hardcore legends Saetia, Off Minor and You And I — to say nothing of Interpol (yes, that Interpol) — Hot Cross recalls the precommercial, proto-screamo boom of 1990s San Diego, where groups such as Heroin and Swing Kids fused piercing screams with arty, angular and deeply emotional hardcore. Having released nearly all of its music so far on drummer Greg Drudy's label, Level-Plane, Hot Cross recently signed to Equal Vision's Hope Division imprint for its most arty, angular and emotionally deep album to date, Risk Revival. And though the new promotional support hasn't made Hot Cross any more commercially friendly, it's nice to know people may think better of screamo after hearing the band.
