Cap'n Jazz broke up in 1995 and splintered into influential groups such as the Promise Ring, American Football and the prolific Joan Of Arc. The longest-running Cap'n Jazz spinoff, Joan Of Arc utilizes a revolving cast of musicians to explore the abstract recesses of singer/guitarist Tim Kinsella's psyche. The 2009 Polyvinyl release Flowers is a fitting beginner's guide to the oft-segmented project. The album wanders between lucid-dream instrumentals and would-be rock tunes. Standout ballads "The Sun Rose" and "Explain Yourselves #2" are at once vulnerable, tragic and gorgeous; these transcendent moments bring cohesion between Joan Of Arc and its extended emo family.
