Juana Molina

Son (Domino)

Son

It may have been a risk, but Juana Molina clearly made the right choice when she quit her cushy job as an Argentinian TV star to pursue music. For proof, just check out her graceful fourth record, Son. Electronics coo and whir throughout her folk compositions, but they never feel like tacked-on flashy flair. Instead, these twelve dreamy, intimate songs offer integral layers of feeling and texture. Despite Son's playful and unconventional nature, the whole thing has a slightly somber feeling to it, mainly owing to the delicate way in which Molina delivers her lyrics (which are all in Spanish). But Son ultimately remains a charming and intriguing listen and should please anyone, from the most docile Nick Drake fan to a spazzed-out Animal Collective freak searching for a musical sedative.
