Opeth

Many of Opeth's ten-minute-plus ballads stir tumultuous feelings -- rage! torment! demonic possession! -- in the listener. But then somewhere in the middle the Swedish death metal band switches gears, and vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt sings the melodic verse of a fallen angel instead of letting loose the guttural screams of a hound from hell. Likewise, be prepared for serious bouts of thrashing spliced with interludes of heartfelt sing-a-longs on Opeth's new album, Ghost Reveries. The melancholy the band is renowned for never slips completely away, but acoustic harmonies fade slowly into the background while the group continues with their sinister sound. In other words, Opeth is anything but your average metal band.

Show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $18-20; call 618-274-6720 for more information.
