Surname similarity first prompted my interest in Pomeroy, but with a press of the "play" button, their bass riffs shattered glass to smithereens and all vanity was sucked straight out the window. Not only does this KC quintet cook up oontza-oontzing lines of funk-rock, they then proceed to ice them with David Fairbanks' distinctive flavor of hip-pop lyrical flow (think Sublime if they had posthumously replaced Brad Nowell with Buck 65). In fact, these guys are so rabble-rousing, they were hand-picked to pump up the troops in the Middle East last September. If Pomeroy has the ability to energize soldiers in Afghanistan, they surely have the vigor to get your shoe-gazing boyfriend to boogie. Oh, and this show happens to be the release party for their new DVD, Live at the Blue Note.
