RFT Seeks St. Louis Comics for 2nd Annual "Standup Throwdown"

It's that time of year again. Time for college basketball's March Madness and the second annual installment of Riverfront Times' Standup Throwdown.

Here's how it works:

Over the next couple of weeks, sixteen St. Louis comics will square off against each other in three rounds of competition. In round No. 1 RFT readers will judge which of the sixteen comedians can compose the funniest tweet. The eight comics who emerge victorious from that round will then submit a YouTube video of themselves addressing a yet-to-be-named topic. Again, RFT readers will vote on whose bit is best. The four finalists from round No. 2 will then compete Tuesday, April 9, at a live event at Plush Nightclub where the audience and RFT's judges will declare a champion. The winner will receive a small monetary award and the much larger prize of being able to brag (like last year's champ, Erik Anker) that s/he is RFT's 2013 comic titleholder. The winner will also be awarded the feature spot in May's Comedy in the Lou at the Firebird (exact date TBA).

Here's how to enter:

The intent of Standup Throwdown is to recognize and celebrate St. Louis' aspiring comedians, so the competition is open to anyone with experience performing at open-mic nights and comedy events. All you need to do to enter is fire off a tweet before 5 p.m. this Friday (March 15) addressing the following topic: "That is so St. Louis..." Use the hashtag #so_stl in your tweet so we can easily find it. RFT will then take the best sixteen tweets to form our entry bracket. The week of March 18-22, RFT's online readers will vote on which tweets are funniest. The following week RFT's readers will vote on which of the eight survivors can make them laugh hardest in a short video set. Oh, and one more thing: If you want to enter Standup Throwdown, please be sure you can make the April 9 event at Plush in the event that you make it to the final four contestants.

Still unclear how the event works? Check out the following links to last year's competition. (Or email us if you're really dense. We judge humor here, not IQ.)
