Holiday hootenannies at the Votolato household are probably a lot quieter now that brothers Cody and Rocky no longer play together in the shape-shifting, Jimmy Eat World-esque Waxwing. But while the former can't quite shake his fondness for throttling post-rock — cf. his tenure as axe-man for spazzy noiseniks Blood Brothers (see our feature this week) — his penchant for discord is complemented nicely by his older brother's acoustic-leaning solo career. Which certainly isn't a bad thing: Makers, Rocky Votolato's latest, is a subtly majestic album, one that's vulnerable and enduring without falling prey to piety. "White Daisy Passing" is an eerie and beautiful echo of lo-fi Elliott Smith, while "Tennessee Train Tracks" features Votolato's boyish twang; the rest of Makers channels the folk solitude of Simon and Garfunkel, yet never sounds beholden to its influences.
