The Dodos opened the night with a pleasant, well-received 45-minute set. Categorizing the San Francisco trio is difficult. Vocalist/guitarist Meric Long has a wistful, weathered voice that's not neutered enough for indie- or folk-rock, but not tough enough for straight-up rock. His guitar playing is also difficult to pigeonhole: Although he mostly trades in fleet-fingered acoustic strumming - think anything from balmy tropical-indie to hippie-folk -- he can coax Sonic Youth-like noise jams from the instrument.

Last night, the group mainly let its rhythmic excursions drive the performance. While many acts use intense drumming bursts to compensate for a lack of songs, the Dodos' bustling percussion is the heart of its songs. Logan Kroeber perched behind a customized drumkit, keeping time like a pair of jawing scissors, and Keaton Snyder utilized unorthodox instrumentation such as the bell-like vibraphone for texture and color. Elements of Krautrock, ambient rock, experimental drone and other genres galloped through the Dodos songs - highlighted by "Jodi," a Stooges-like noise burst that bowled over the audience.

After "Jodi," the rest of the Dodos' set felt anticlimactic. "Ashley," a Twitter request, was breezy but forgettable, and the final song - which had multiple movements and styles, from indie-paranoia to burps of noise -- was indistinct and boring.

Critic's Notebook: A fan named Craig proposed to his girlfriend, Ashley, after the Dodos set, with a very sweet speech about how the Dodos' Visiter meant a lot to them as a couple. Aww.

Personal Bias: Neko Case mentioned something about her huge mass of thick hair and referenced fellow big-haired musician ?uestlove. St. Louis humidity - it'll do that to you every time. Girl, I feel you.

Overheard in the crowd: During the Dodos set: "Was that a drop D? I think so."
