David Berman of the Silver Jews is the best lyricist working in rock music today. Over the course of seventeen years and five albums, Berman's brilliant words have earned him a small but devoted following (owing in large part, at least at first, to the presence of Pavement's Stephen Malkmus, a longtime collaborator). The Jews' most recent album, Tanglewood Numbers, seamlessly moves between country and rock, though the description hardly captures the glory of Berman's vision. "Like a brown bird nesting in a Texaco sign, I got a point of view," he sings on "I'm Getting Back Into Getting Back Into You," and one just wants to climb on up there with him. Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Jennifer O'Connor opens.
