SIUE Alumni Honor Misssissippi River Festival

Over at the Daily RFT, Chad Garrison reports that SIUE alumni have plans in the works to honor the location of the Mississippi River Festival, the outdoor space that hosted rock shows and the symphony in the 1970s. From a story he links:

A new committee of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville alumni will erect a state historical marker at the old Mississippi River Festival site this summer.

The MRF Commemoration Committee has agreed to pay $3,000 for the Illinois State Historical Society marker, which will recognize the summer music festival's contribution to local, state and national history from 1969 to 1980.

"We thought it was appropriate to mark the spot as a first step," said committee chairman Larry Lexow, 55, of Edwardsville.

The marker will consist of a 44-by-51-inch, cast-aluminum plaque on a pole off North University Drive, where MRF concertgoers parked before walking to a natural amphitheater.

Randy Roberts wrote about a book published in honor of MRF in 2007, Images of America: The Mississippi River Festival, right at that link. Worth checking out, for more memories.
