Spouse

Tuesday, October 18; Frederick's Music Lounge (4454 Chippewa Street)

Spouse

Spouse hails from Northampton, Massachusetts, so it's not too surprising that José Ayerve's singing often resembles the creaky, voice-crackling cadences of Dinosaur Jr's J Mascis, who was himself born in nearby Amherst. But on Spouse's third album, Are You Gonna Kiss or Wave Goodbye?, the band moves beyond its influences -- synth-driven new-wave melancholy, lo-fi riffing popular with indie-rock slackers and heart-on-sleeve emoting à la Death Cab for Cutie. In fact, Goodbye's smooth assimilation of disparate styles resembles the tricks of fellow Northeast natives the Pernice Brothers, whom Ayerve recently opened for (and also road-manages).

Show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $4; call 314-351-5711 for more information.
